Fort McMurray and the wider Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo have dozens of named work camps and lodges. Here's who actually runs the ones we could verify, and roughly how big they are where an operator's own page says so.

Search "list of work camps in Fort McMurray" and you'll mostly get job boards. This page is the other half of that question: the actual names of the lodges, and the companies that build and run them. None of the room counts below are guesses -- each one comes straight off the operator's own site or a company-published document, and every source is listed and dated at the bottom of this page. Where an operator didn't publish a number, there's no number here.

Civeo

Civeo Corporation is the largest workforce-lodging operator in the region and runs the most individually named camps. Its two biggest single properties are Wapasu Creek Lodge north of Fort McMurray, which Civeo's own property page lists at 5,223 rooms, and the Beaver River complex 49 km north of Fort McMurray at the Fort MacKay turnoff off Highway 63, made up of Beaver River Executive Lodge (1,234 rooms) and Athabasca Lodge (2,005 rooms).

Civeo also operates a cluster of camps it markets together as Fort McMurray Village, 26 km northwest of Fort McMurray off Highway 63: Bighorn Lodge (763 rooms), Black Bear Lodge (531 rooms), Buffalo Lodge (326 rooms), Lynx Lodge (855 rooms), and Wolverine Lodge (856 rooms). Rounding out Civeo's regional lodges: Borealis Lodge (1,504 rooms, north of Fort McMurray), Hudson Lodge (624 rooms, 22 km north of Fort McMurray off Highway 63), Grey Wolf Lodge (769 rooms, near the Hammerstone Quarry off the East Athabasca Highway), Anzac Lodge (478 rooms, southeast of Fort McMurray), and Conklin Lodge (142 rooms, west of Highway 881 near Conklin, in the southern part of Wood Buffalo).

Dexterra Group (formerly Horizon North)

Dexterra Group, under its Horizon North brand, operates Birch Mountain Lodge -- 600 executive-style rooms about 32 km north of Fort McMurray off Highway 63 and AOSTRA Road, marketed as an "open lodge" available to any contractor, not tied to one client. Separately, Horizon North/Dexterra runs the lodging that serves Suncor's Firebag site, 120 km northeast of Fort McMurray: Firebag Village, Willow Lodge, and Mount Logan Lodge. Neither Suncor nor Horizon North publishes a combined room count for the Firebag lodges, so none is given here.

ATCO Frontec

ATCO's camp-services division, Frontec, runs Creeburn Lake Lodge and Barge Landing Lodge about 63 km north of Fort McMurray, both operated as a joint venture with the Fort McKay First Nation. ATCO's own project page doesn't state a current combined room count for the two lodges, so none is given here.

Black Diamond Group

Black Diamond Group's Sunday Creek Lodge, near Conklin in the southern part of Wood Buffalo, is one of the better-known Black Diamond properties in the oil sands region. Its own current project-profile page doesn't list an active room count, and notes the lodge has gone through ownership and operational changes over the years -- see Sources below rather than assuming it's currently open before relying on it.

Room counts and even which company operates a given lodge change over time -- camps get sold, renovated, or shut down, and none of the companies above publish a single dated master list. The figures above are what each operator's own page stated when we checked it on 2026-09-07 (see Sources). If you're trying to figure out where you personally will be staying, ask your employer or the contractor that hired you -- not this page.

Frequently asked questions

Who actually runs the work camps around Fort McMurray?

Almost never the oil sands company itself. Suncor, Syncrude, CNRL, and the other operators contract the actual lodge -- building it, staffing the kitchen and housekeeping, running the front desk -- out to specialized workforce-accommodation companies. The biggest names in the Wood Buffalo area are Civeo, Dexterra Group (formerly Horizon North), ATCO Frontec, and Black Diamond Group.

Do all oil sands workers stay in a camp?

No. Plenty of people who live in Fort McMurray or Fort MacKay commute to site daily and never set foot in a lodge. Camps are mainly for workers whose home isn't in the Wood Buffalo area, and for rotation-based crews on sites too far out for a daily drive.

How do I find out which camp I'll be staying in?

Your employer or the contractor that hired you assigns your camp based on the project you're working, not the other way around -- and it can change between rotations if you move projects. Ask directly before you show up; don't assume it's whichever lodge you've heard of.

Is this list complete or permanently up to date?

No. Nobody publishes a single, current, official directory of every camp in the region -- operators change, lodges get renovated, sold, or shut down, and room counts change with them (see the Sources list below for exactly what each figure is based on and when it was checked). Treat this page as a snapshot, not a live directory, and confirm your own camp assignment with your employer rather than this page.

Can I just show up and book a room at one of these camps?

Sometimes. A handful of lodges -- Civeo and Black Diamond both use the term "open lodge" -- take direct bookings from contractors or individual workers without a company contract. Most camp beds, though, are allocated to whichever employer or contractor is running that project. Check the operator's own booking page (linked in Sources) instead of assuming a bed is available.
